(a) While diluting an acid, why is it recommended that the acid should be added to water and not water to the acid ?
(b) Dry hydrogen chloride gas does not change the colour of dry litmus paper. Why ?
(a) Dilution of concentrated acid is an exothermic process. If we add water to a concentrated acid, so much heat will be generated and it may cause the mixture to splash out and course burns.
But when acid is added to water slowly, the mixture will not splash out. So, it it is recommended that the acid should be added to water and not water to acid.
(b) Hydronium ion are responsive for the colour change of litmus paper. Dry HCl does not dissociates to give
ions due to absence of water because Acid dissociates to give ions only in the aqueous solution.
In this case, HCl is not in aqueous form and also litmus paper is dry, so the colour of litmus paper does not change.
