The old man in the story 'old man at the bridge' by Ernest Miller Hemingway, is very tired and exhausted. He has escaped from his hometown due to Spanish civil war. In the whole story he is sitting near the road, thinking he might not go any further. He was discussing the ill effects of the war, how he and many like him have been displaced from their homes. He was very depressed.
