Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma. There are two types of pollination: self-pollination and cross-pollination.

  1. Self pollination: Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to stigma of same flower.
  2. Cross pollination: Transfer of pollen grains from anther of one plant to the stigma of other flower of same species.

Two agents of pollination are – Water, Air, Insects, etc.

When the correct species of pollen grains lands on the stigma it results in some chemical response from the ovary that causes the growth of pollen tube from the pollen grain. The pollen grain slides down the pollen tube and enters the ovary where it meets the egg. This process is called fertilization and leads to the formation of the zygote.
