In everyday life, we see lots of objects which are at rest and lots of objects which are in motion.

Rest-

A body is said to be at rest if it does not change its position with respect to its surroundings with the passage of time. A body at rest is also called a stationary body.

For example, a tree is fixed at a place, so we say that it is stationary. Similarly, a house, a school, a factory, electric poles, and telephone poles are all stationary objects which remain fixed at a place.

Motion-

Motion is known as a change in the position of an object with time.

I.e Movement of any object from one position to another position with respect to the observer

(which is  taken as a reference point) with the passage of time is called Motion.

Birds fly, fish swim, blood flows through veins and arteries, and car movement all are examples of motion. Even very small objects like Atoms, molecules, as well as very big objects like planets, stars, and galaxies are all in motion.

  • Rest and motion are relative to each other.

That is An object may appear to be moving for one person and stationary for some other.

e.g   All passengers sitting inside a moving bus are at rest with respect to one another.

But all appear to be in motion to a man standing outside the bus.
