Pollination: It is a process of reproduction in the plants in which the pollen grains from an anther that is the male portion of a flower, being transferred to a female part in the flower, known as the stigma for reproduction. 

Self-pollination

Cross-pollination

1. It occurs when the pollen from the anther is attached to the stigma of the same flower, or another flower of the same plant.

2. It leads to the reduction in genetic diversity.

1. It occurs when the pollen transfer from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower on a different individual of the same species.

2. It leads to the increment in genetic diversity.

These are the significance of Pollination :

  • It is the order of transferring pollen grains from the anther to the stigma.  
  • It is important for the life cycle of plants and for this they also involve insects, birds, even wind for the transfer of pollen grain to the stigma for the process of fertilisation.
