An adjective is a word that is used to describe a noun and tell about its quality. Examples of adjective are old woman, young lady, white shorts, intelligent teacher etc.

There are three degree of adjectives -

1. Positive- a positive degree is the first degree of an adjective. It represents the adjective words in its first form. The above given examples of adjectives- old, young, white and intelligent are all in first form.

2. Comparitive- a comparative degree is used when we compare two adjectives. It shows the characteristics and quality of one thing over the another thing. In it , the sentences uses the word 'than' and 'to'. Thus, it only makes comparison between two things not less or more than two. Examples are -

a. A woman is older than a girl.

b. A teenager is younger than a lady.

c. A detergent is whiter than the water.

d. An IAS officer is more intelligent than a clerk.

3. Superlative- a superlative degree is used when we compare one thing with more than two things or many things. It shows the highest degree of one thing in comparison to other two. It shows that one thing surpasses or go ahead other things. Examples of superlative degrees are-

a.  Ananya is the oldest of all girls.

b. Sweety is the youngest of all ladies.

c. He is the richest man in the town.

d. She is the most intelligent girl in the class.
