Sati was a hindu historical practice where the widow used to sit on the pyre of her dead husband and gave away her life with him. It was first first between 320CE to 550CE, during the rule of Gupta Empire. It was banned in1829 by the Governor General Lord william Bentinck with great efforts by Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
