Cleanliness is next to Godliness

The line ' Cleanliness is next to Godliness' was given by Mahatma Gandhi to highlight the importance of cleanliness for people. For him cleanliness is a virtue worth inculcating. Such was the importance ascribed to cleanliness that Mahatma Gandhi said that those who stay clean or maintain cleanliness are doing a task worth praising. It is only in clean houses, places that God comes. This was said to raise awareness among people on cleanliness. 

His idea of cleanliness was dual folded. By cleanliness he means physical cleanliness and mental cleanliness. Physical cleanliness means cleanliness of one's body and surrounding. We can clean our body by bathing regularly, brushing our teeth twice a day, washing our hands before eating and after using washroom. We should comb our hair, keep our body clean by eating good, nutritious and healthy food. Our diet should be balanced and we should refrain from overeating, malnutrition and junk food.

Physical cleanliness also means cleanliness of one's surrounding. We should keep our surrounding clean just as we keep our body clean. We cannot live in an unclean surrounding as it will affect us and makes us sick. We can keep our surrounding clean by throwing garbage in the dustbin, by using proper dustbins - Green for biodegradable waste and blue for non-biodegradable waste. We should do household work and keep toilets clean. We should take precautions to avoid diseases and we should not pollute our environment and must take measure to curb pollution be it air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution.

Another cleanliness is cleanliness of mind or mental cleanliness and hygiene. We can keep ourselves mentally clean when our body is clean and surrounding is clean. To keep ourselves mentally clean we should pray daily. We should worship God and Goddess. We should meditate. We should avoid the use of alcohol. We should not indulge in substance abuse. We should not use drugs. All these are steps to ensure cleanliness at all levels.
