(a) This is because extraction of metal is easier from its oxides as compared to their carbonates and sulphides.

(b) Aluminium is a highly reactive metal but it is resistant to corrosion. That's why it is used to make cooking utensils.

Aluminium reacts with oxygen and form a thin layer of aluminium oxide. This oxide layer acts as a coating layer to resist  further corrosion.
