Air pollutants affect lichens in many ways. Lichens are plants that grow in places like tree bark or rocks. They are good at absorbing water in order to get nutrients. Rainwater is used as a great source of producing nutrients to keep them alive. Therefore, when air pollutants in this rainwater especially sulphur dioxide can damage lichens and thus prevents them from further growing.
