Refractive index compares the speed of light in a particular medium with the speed of light in vaccum. Refractive index measures the optical density of a medium.

The Refractive index of the medium \mu _{m} is -

\mu _{m}=\frac{speed \; of\; light\; in\; air}{speed\; of\; light\; in\; medium}=\frac{C}{V}

Let refractive index of medium 1 is \mu _{1} and speed is V_{1}

So, \mu _{1}=\frac{C}{V_{1}}   ______(i)

Let Refractive index of medium 2 is \mu _{2} and speed of light is V_{2}

So, \mu _{2}=\frac{C}{V_{2}}

Refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is -

        \mu _{21}=\frac{C/\frac{1}{2}}{C/V_{1}}=\frac{V_{1}}{V_{2}}

        \mu _{21}=\frac{Speed\; of\; light\; in\; medium \; 1}{speed\; of\; light\; in\; medium \; 2}=\frac{V_{1}}{V_{2}}
