How is sodium hydroxide manufactured in industries ? Name the process. In this process a gas X is formed as by-product. This gas reacts with lime water to give a compound Y, which is used as a bleaching agent in the chemical industry. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is used to prepare sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in industries. And this process is called as Chloro - alkali

2NaCl (aq)+ 2H_{2}O(s)\rightarrow 2NaOH (aq)+Cl_{2}(g)H_{2}(g)

X \rightarrow Cl_{2}

Ca(OH)_{2}+Cl_{2}\rightarrow CaOCl_{2}+H_{2}O

So, from equation it is closely noticed that

X = Cl_{2}

Y = CaOCl_{2} (calcium oxy chloride) or Bleaching powder
