As we know India became free in 1947. People began to think about the position of English in free India. During the British rule in India, English was the official language. It was also the medium of instruction in schools and colleges. English is a foreign language. It has no relation with our language and culture. Apart from this English is important in many ways. It is highly developed language. It is a great store house of modern knowledge. It has acquired the status of the international language. It is the language of science, commerce and diplomacy. We can know about the latest researches in science and technology through English. It has increased national awareness among us.Our country is the home of many races and languages. It is important for our relations with foreign countries. It is a gateway to world culture. Therefore we must give a place to English in our educational system. But it should be studied as a second language. It cannot occupy the same position as it did during British rule.
