The relationship between resolving power (Rp) and resolving limit (Rl) of optical instruments is given by:

Rp = 1 / Rl

  • Resolving Power (Rp): It is the ability of an optical instrument to distinguish between two closely spaced objects.

  • Resolving Limit (Rl): It is the minimum distance between two points that can be distinguished as separate.

So, resolving power is the reciprocal of resolving limit, the lower the resolving limit, the higher will be the resolving power.
