Photosynthesis is the process through which plants prepare their food at the leaves. 

chlorophyll is a green coloured pigment that is mandated to perform photosynthesis because it used the sunlight to break down to the energy plants need. 

That is why only leaves can prepare food for the plants and are called the food factory of plants.
