In an industrial process used for the manufacture of sodium hydroxide, a gas ‘A’ is formed as a by-product. The gas ‘A’ reacts with lime water to give a compound ‘B’ which is used as a bleaching agent in the chemical industry. Identify ‘A’ and ‘B’. Also give the chemical equations of the reactions involved.

Chlor-alkali process is used to prepare sodium hydroxide (NaOH) from sodium chloride (Noa)

  • 2NaCk(aq)+2H_{2}O(l)\rightarrow 2NaOH(aq)+Cl_{2}(g)+H_{2}O

                    X\rightarrow Cl_{2}(chlorine \; gas)

  • Ca(OH)_{2}+Cl_{2}\rightarrow CaOCl_{2}+H_{2}O

So, from equation it is clearly noticed that

               X=Cl_{2}

                y=CaOCl_{2} (calcium oxychloride) or Bleaching powder.
