In the electrolysis of water

(a) Gases liberated at anode and cathode are-

Anode- Oxygen Cathode- Hydrogen

(b) The volume of gas collected on one electrode is two times that on the other electrode  Because one molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen/ 2H2O----->2H2+O2

(c) Electrolysis of water will not take place if dil. H_{2}SO_{4} is not added to water
