Reverse peristalsis is the reverse of involuntary smooth muscular contractions. It usually occurs before vomiting and acts as a precursor. It can occur due to food poisoning that activates the emetic center of the brain which in turn signals as acid reflux from the stomach to the esophagus. Reverse peristalsis is referred to as retroperistalsis..
