Mutual coexistence, respect for the other cultures and a sensevof pride in one 's own culture, country and language are some of the important values that we can learn from the lesson "The Last Lesson"

The story is about a teacher who teaches French in France. His name is M. Hamel. He is a patriot at heart. He is been teaching French for forty years however suddenly it was his last lesson in school.  The changes was being done in curriculum and children will no longer be taught French  as their mother language. Instead of French, German will be taught in school. This was happening due to a political upheaval in which German has succeeded in colonising the French. So, M. Hamel was filled with nostalgia, grief and patriotism and so were the old people who never learned French and even boy called Franz.

They are in shock as suddenly they realize how important it is to learn one's language as it is symbolic of one's culture and historical backgrounds. It is a living proff of a civilisation being alive. It is a matter of pride,  learning one's language and culture and efforts should be made to preserve it and learn it both at written and verbal level.
