The Principal's point of view towards Martha changed throughout the story. His view earlier was that only some elite students should be allowed to access the benefits and the fame of coming at first position. He couldn't care less about those students who are consistently doing good in academics but rather he thought about who was more prominent in school. In the school this happened, when the teacher Mr. Joanne shared with Mr. Boone that despite of Martha's good performance Joanna will win because her father is on the Board and he owns the only store in Mexican. Another incident was when Martha was called to Principal's office to inform about the changed school policy when amount of fifteen dollars will be charged to get the scholarship jacket.

Martha's feeling also changed over time, first, when she listened to the conversation of her teachers about herself and Joanne. This made her cry quietly. The second instance was when Martha was called to Principal's room and informed about the change in policy. She informed the same to her grandfather and  she is angry on her teacher's , principal and grandfather. She again cried on her way back to home. Her emotions changed one last time, when she is sad to inform the principal that her grandfather couldn't pay for the jacket. This changed Principal's opinion about Martha and he realised his mistake and allowed the girl to have the jacket without paying anything. This made her happy.
