Ten one rupee coins are put on top of one another on a table. Each coin has a mass m kg. Give the magnitude and direction of (a) The force on the 7th coin (counted from the bottom) due to all coins above it. (b) The force on the 7th coin by the eighth coin and (c) The reaction of the sixth coin on the seventh coin

Answers (1)

a) The force on the seventh is due to seven coins above it, which is equal to 3 mg.

b) The eighth coin is placed directly above the 7th coin. Thus the net force experienced by 7th coin is due to 8th coin (as the 7th coin is in contact with 8th coin only from the top). Hence the force on the 7th coin by the eighth coin is 3 mg.

c) Since the 6th coin will experience a force due to 4 coins that are present above i.e., 4 mg. According to Newton's law of action-reaction pair, the 6th coin will have a reaction force on 7th coin of magnitude 4 mg in the upward direction.
