The image formed by a spherical mirror is real, inverted and is of magnification -2. If the image is at a distance of 30cm from the mirror, where is the object placed? find the focal length of the mirror. As given in the statement 

magnification = -2 

Image distance = -30 cm 

m = \frac{-v}{u} \\\\ 2 = \frac{30}{u}\\\\ u = -15 cm

According to mirror formula : 

\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} + \frac{1}{u}\\\\ \frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{-30} + \frac{1}{-15}\\\\ 3/-30\\\\ f = -10 cm

When the object will be shifted to 10cm towards the mirror, then the image distance will become 

U = 15-10 = 5 cm 

The object is placed between principle focus and pole of the mirror 

characteristics 

1) image will be virtual 

2) Image will be erect
