What are fossils? Describe briefly two methods of determining the age of fossils.
Fossils are an impression of organisms that lived in the remote past fossils provide the evidence that the present animal has originated from previously existing ones through the process of continuous evolution. Age of fossils can be determined by these methods.
(i) Carbon dating - The radiocarbon dating method detects the ratios of different isotopes of carbon in the fossils.
(ii) Relative Method - This method estimates the age of the layer of the earth's crust where the fossil is found. Fossils in the deeper layer are more ancient than the upper layer of crust.
