An algal bloom is a rapid growth of algae in an aquatic system. It can occur in freshwater as well as marine environments. The presence of algal bloom can lead to the death of fishes and other aquatic organisms because they produce toxins from using up oxygen present in the water. If an affected organism is consumed by humans, it could also lead to human sickness.
