According to Robert Lynd, forgetting is not always harmful. Sometimes, it is virtue for some people. The list of articles lost by railway travellers  indicates that forgetfulness is very common among different classes of people. Sportsmen forget their bats and balls; patients forget medicines; the author himself forgets walking sticks.

According to author the main reason of this type of forgetfulness is lack of interest. But the author points out that forgetfulness is not only a vice but it is a virtue also. He describes in defence of forgetfulness that the poet may forget to post an important letter because his memory is crowded with higher and nobler thoughts than ordinary things. In the same way the sportsmen, anglers and writers are lost in imaginations. They make the best use of their time. This proves that forgetfulness is sometimes a boon for great deeds like discoveries and inventions.
