What is a food chain? Why is the flow of energy in an ecosystem unidirectional? Explain briefly.
Food chain - It is the chain of an organism through which energy is transferred in the form of food by the process of one organism consuming another.
The flow of energy in food chains is unidirectional because -
(i) The energy captured by autotrophs (plants) does not revert back to the solar input (sun).
(ii) The energy which is passed to herbivores does not come back to the plants (autotrophs).
(iii) As energy moves progressively through the different trophic levels it is no longer available to the previous level.
