Difference between alkali metals and halogens

Alkali metals- They have 1 valence electron, always have valency +1, can only form cations, can act as reducing agents, exist normally in the solid state.

Halogens- They have 7 valence electrons, always have valency -1, can only form anions, can act as oxidising agents. They normally are in gaseous/liquid state
