A verb is a word which denotes action or being or possession. it indicates the happening of something. For example- The guard 'showed' the red flag.

A transitive verb is a verb which requires an object to complete its meaning. For example- His mother needs water is the transitive verb here is 'need'. Here the 'water' is the object of the verb and this object is necessary to complete the meaning of  'His mother needs.'

A verb can also be intransitive. Intransitive verbs don't require an object to complete its meaning as it has a complete meaning by itself. For example- The child danced. The verb 'smiled' does not need an object to complete its meaning, hence an intransitive verb.
