Bal Gangadhar Tilak was an independence activist, teacher, politician, author and freedom fighter . He was born on 23 July 1856 in Ratnagiri district, Bombay state, British India. He was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement. His title was Lokmanya. Mahatma Gandhi called him "The Maker of the Modern India". He was one of the first and strongest advocates of Swaraj. He wrote the book "The Arctic Home in the Vedas" in 1903. He started two weekly magazine 'Kesri' in Marathi and 'Maratha' in English. He died on 1 August 1920.
