Swachh Bharat Abhiyan also known as Clean India Mission started on two thousand fourteen by Government of India. It was inaugurated by our honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi. The objective of this programme is to raise awareness about solid waste management and open defecation system.

Solid waste management means disposal of garbage in an appropriate and environment healthy manner. It focuses on three R's- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Reduce means buying less and wearing it for longer times. Thus, it means creating less waste and only buying things which are of good quality and long lasting. Reuse means using a thing in different manners till it can't be used further. It includes examples such as printing both sides of the paper, resuing a piece of cloth for cleaning the kitchen and making fabric such as handkerchief, socks, toys out of it. Recycling means a process of making useful things from waste, here waste means things which cannot be used again.

The idea of Swachh Bharat is not newn  Infact,  it is an extension of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan, the first phase of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan lasted till October. The campaign of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan contains photo of Gandhi ji because it was first Gandhi ji who raised awareness regarding Cleanliness. He said "Cleanliness is Godliness" and considered cleanliness an important virtue worth inculcating. He talked about both physical cleanliness that is cleanliness of our body and surrounding. It could be achieved by brushing twice a day, bathing daily, keeping our homes clean by doing household work. He also talked about mental hygiene and cleanliness by not drinking alcohol, by not abusing anyone and not lying.

Even today also, the initiative of throwing garbage in trucks brought by safaai mitras or Sanitation workers is aimed towards physical cleanliness of our home and surrounding. Calling these people safaai mitras raises awareness on the importance of giving respect to these people. Also, they raise awareness on blue and green dustbin for dry or non biodegradable waste such as plastic and metals  and wet waste or biobiodegradable such as leaves, fruits and vegetables peels and to throw them seperately.
