A 40W , 220 V lamp and 100W, 220 V lamp are connected in series across x volt supply such that 40W LAMP GIVES rated output,the value of x is

Answers (1)

Let the resistance of 40W bulb be R1 and 100W is R2.

R1 = \frac{220^2}{40} = 1210\Omega

R2 = \frac{220^2}{100} = 484\Omega

It is given that 40W bulb is giving rated output, hence it means the voltage difference R1 is 220V.

The current in the series circuit is I, and it can be calculated as

I = \frac{220}{1210} = 0.182A

Voltage by the battery is V = I(R1+R2)

V = 0.182(1210+484)

V = 308.3 V
