While AgCl dissolves in ammonia (due to the formation of the complex ion \left.\left[\mathrm{Ag}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_2\right]^{+}\right) \text {, } \mathrm{Hg}_2 \mathrm{Cl}_2 gives a black precipitate consisting of a mixture of chloro-mercuric amide and elemental mercury.
