Unpolarized light of intensity I0 is incident on surface of a block of glass at Brewster’s angle. In that case, which one of the following statements is true ?

  • Option 1)

transmitted light is partially polarized with intensity I0/2.

  • Option 2)

transmitted light is completely polarized with intensity less than I0/2.

  • Option 3)

reflected light is completely polarized with intensity less than I0/2.

As we learnt in

Malus Law -

I= I_{0}\cdot \cos ^{2}\theta

\theta = angle made by E vector with transmission axis.

- wherein

I= Intensity of transmitted light after polarisation .

I_{0}= Intensity of  incident light.

When unpolarised light is incident at Brewster's angle then reflected light is completely polarised and intensity of the reflected light less than half of the incident light.

Correct option is 3.

Option 1)

transmitted light is partially polarized with intensity I0/2.

This is an incorrect option.

Option 2)

transmitted light is completely polarized with intensity less than I0/2.

This is an incorrect option.

Option 3)

reflected light is completely polarized with intensity less than I0/2.

This is the correct option.

Option 4)

reflected light is partially polarized with intensity I0/2.

This is an incorrect option.
