Octahedral complexes of  \mathrm{copper(II) } undergo structural distortion \mathrm{(Jahn-Teller).}
Which one of the given \mathrm{copper (II) } complexes will show the maximum structural distortion? \mathrm{(en - ethylenediamine;\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~N}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{NH}_{2} ) }

Option: 1

\left[\mathrm{Cu}\left(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\right)_{6}\right] \mathrm{SO}_{4}

Option: 2

\left[\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{en})\left(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\right)_{4}\right] \mathrm{SO}_{4}

Option: 3

\operatorname{cis}-\left[\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{en})_{2} \mathrm{Cl}_{2}\right]

Option: 4

\mathrm{\text { trans- }\left[\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{en})_{2} \mathrm{Cl}_{2}\right]}

Electronic configuration of \mathrm{Cu\left ( II \right )} is \mathrm{d^{9}}

The maximum John-Teller distortion will be shown maximum by  \mathrm{\left[\mathrm{Cu}\left(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\right)_{6}\right] \mathrm{SO}_{4}}  , as \mathrm{\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}}  is ,monodentate ligand. While in other complexes ethylenediamine (en) is present which forms chelate and due to chelotion,  distortion is lessened because ring Strain  can happen.

Hence option (A) is correct.
