The Bulk moduli of Ethanol, Mercury and water  are  given  as  0.9,  25  and  2.2 respectively in units of 109 Nm-2.  For a given value of pressure, the fractional compression in volume is \frac{\Delta V}{V} . Which of the following statements about \frac{\Delta V}{V}for these three liquids is correct ?

  • Option 1)

    Ethanol > Water > Mercury

  • Option 2)

    Water > Ethanol > Mercury

  • Option 3)

    Mercury > Ethanol > Water

  • Option 4)

As we have learned

Bulk Modulus -

Ratio of normal stress to volumetric strain.

K=\frac{f/A}{-\Delta v/v}=\frac{-Fv}{A\Delta v}

K=\frac{-Pv}{\Delta v}

v = Original  volume

\Delta v = Change in volume

P = Increase in pressure

-ve(sign) shows volume (\Delta v) decrease.

- wherein

 Bulk modulus = -\frac{\Delta p }{B}

\frac{\Delta v}{v}= -\frac{\Delta P }{B}

\frac{\Delta v}{v}\propto \frac{1 }{B}

order of \frac{\Delta v}{v}  is

ethanol > water > mercury

Option 1)

Ethanol > Water > Mercury

Option 2)

Water > Ethanol > Mercury

Option 3)

Mercury > Ethanol > Water

Option 4)

Ethanol > Mercury > Water
