We will 5 horizontal and 6 vertical lines

Number of squares will depend on the different sizes of the square

For the square of size 1x1 : there are 4 options of selecting horizontal pair of lines, and 5 options of selecting vertical pair of lines: number of ways = 4 x 5 = 20

For the square of size 2x2 : there are 3 options of selecting horizontal pair of lines, and 4 options of selecting vertical pair of lines: number of ways = 3 x 4 = 12

Similarly, squares of size 3x3: number is 2x3 = 6

For 4x4: number = 1x2 = 2

No more squares are possible in this

So, total number of squares are 20 + 12 + 6 + 2 = 40
