When HCl reacts with finely powdered iron, it forms ferrous chloride and not ferric chloride. Why?

Answers (1)

Fe reacts with HCl to form FeCl? and H?

                  Fe + 2 HCl ---> FeCl? + H?

H? (reducing agent) thus liberated prevents the oxidation of FeCl? to FeCl?.
