As we have learnt in

 Frequently Used Inequalities

\\\mathrm{1.\;\;(x-a)(x-b)<0\Rightarrow x\in(a,b),\;where\;\;a<b}\\\mathrm{2.\;\;(x-a)(x-b)>0\Rightarrow x\in(-\infty,a)\cup(b,\infty),\;where\;\;a<b}\\\mathrm{3.\;\;x^2\leq a^2\Rightarrow x\in[-a,a]}\\\mathrm{4.\;\;x^2\geq a^2\Rightarrow x\in(-\infty,-a]\cup[a,\infty)}

 

Now,

Given (x + 1)(x - 3) < 0

on number line mark x = -1, 3

from the concept  -1 < x < 3 

correct option is x\in(-1,3)
