A classroom contains an equal number of boys and girls.
b = g
If 8 girls leave, twice as many boys as girls remain.
b = 2(g-8)

Replace g with b
 b = 2(b-8)
 b = 2b - 16
 16 = 2b - b
 b = 16 boys, then 16 girls originally

 Total number of 32 boys and girls
