An insulated container contains 1 mole of a liquid, a molar volume of 200 ml at a pressure of 1 bar. When liquid is steeply passed to a container with 100 bar pressure, volume decreases to 198 ml. Find \Delta H and \Delta E (in bar ml) for the process.

According to first law of thermodynamics,

\Delta E=q+w

As it is given container is insulated hence no transfer of heat, q=0

\Delta E=0+w

\Delta E=-P\Delta V

\Delta E=-100(198-200) = +200 \, bar ml

Now we also know,

\mathrm{\Delta H=\Delta E+(P_2V_2-P_1V_1)}

\mathrm{\Delta H=200 + (198\times 100-200\times 1)}

\Delta H=19800 bar ml
