Both Assertion & Reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion. Meiosis, which reduces the number of chromosomes in the gametes to half of their parent germ cells, provides a really clever solution to this issue. Furthermore, homologous chromosomes can recombine during meiosis' prophase I.

Option 1 is the correct answer.
