- These are the simplest and smallest prokaryotes.
- Size of Mycoplasma ranges from 0.1-0.15 micrometre
- Mycoplasma was discovered from cattle suffering from pleuropneumonia. Thus, mycoplasma is also called pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO).
- The cell wall is absent in mycoplasma.
- Peptidoglyan (murein) is absent. This characterstic make them naturally resistant to antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis.
- These organisms can change their shape. Hence, they are pleomorphic.
- They are heterotrophic. They can be saprophytic or parasitic.
- Mycoplasma causes mycoplasmal urethritis in humans,
- Plant diseases caused by mycoplasma include little leaf of brinjal, witches broom etc
