Mycoplasma -

  • These are the simplest and smallest prokaryotes.
  • Size of Mycoplasma ranges from 0.1-0.15 micrometre
  • Mycoplasma was discovered from cattle suffering from pleuropneumonia. Thus, mycoplasma is also called pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO).
  • The cell wall is absent in mycoplasma.
  • Peptidoglyan (murein) is absent. This characterstic make them naturally resistant to antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis.
  • These organisms can change their shape. Hence, they are pleomorphic.
  • They are heterotrophic. They can be saprophytic or parasitic.
  • Mycoplasma causes mycoplasmal urethritis in humans,
  • Plant diseases caused by mycoplasma include little leaf of brinjal, witches broom etc
