Chipko movement was launched for the protection of:
Forests
Livestock
Wet lands
Grasslands
The non-violent Chipko Movement was founded in the 1970s with the intention of preventing the destruction of trees and forests. The phrase "embrace," which the locals used to hug the trees in order to shield them from wood cutters, served as the inspiration for the name of the Chipko Moment.
The Gandhian idea of peaceful resistance to attain the aims served as the foundation for the Chipko movement. A group of villagers in Uttrakhand who opposed tree cutting launched the Chipko Movement. The first structured movement to defend trees against the commercial forestry agenda was launched in April 1972.
