Between the outer epidermis and the inner vascular structures, in the dicot stems, there is a ground tissue region called the cortex. In dicot stems, it may also contain sclerenchyma and collenchyma cells but is largely made up of parenchyma cells. The hypodermis, general cortex, and endodermis are the three divisions of the dicot stem's cortex. In monocot stems, the hypodermis is the only part of the cortex. The hypodermis, which has two to three layers, is made up of sclerenchymatous cells.
