\mathrm{SOCl_2} causes \mathrm{SN_i} (intramolecular nucleophilic substitution) in alcohols. In the \mathrm{SN_i} reaction, there is a retention of configuration.

However, \mathrm{SOCl_2} in the presence of a base like Pyridine leads to \mathrm{SN_2} reaction.
