Structure of DNA

DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that all living things use to store their genetic information. It looks like a bent ladder because it is shaped like a double helix. It was James Watson and Francis Crick who found this structure, with important help from Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins.

DNA is made up of very small units known as nucleotides. Every nucleotide is made up of three parts:

1. Deoxyribose, a type of sugar, sets up a framework.

2. The phosphate group links the sugar molecules together to make DNA's backbone.

3. Nitrogen bases come in four different types: Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Guanine (G).

The bases that make up DNA hold the two lines together:

Adenine (A) and Thymine (T) always bind together.

This is always how cytosine (C) pairs with guanine (G).

Like the steps on a ladder, hydrogen bonds connect these base pairs. This unique pair helps DNA repeat itself correctly during replication, which makes sure that genes are passed down from one generation to the next. The structure of DNA is perfect for carrying and saving life instructions!????
