Explain how sound is heard by ears.
When sound waves hit the ear, the pinna, which is the outer ear, picks them up.
They then move through the ear canal and hit the eardrum which makes it tremble. The waves go through the malleus, incus, and stapes bones in the middle ear. These bones boost the sound and send it to the inner ear. Tiny hair-like cells inside the cochlea, a fluid-filled structure pick up on the vibrations and turn them into electrical messages. The auditory nerve sends these messages to the brain, where they are turned into sound. This is how we can hear and understand sounds around us.
