For irreversible expansion of an ideal gas under isothermal condition -

We know, for a spontaneous process, \Delta \mathrm{S}_{\text {total }}>0 and since the irreversible process is always spontaneous therefore \Delta \mathrm{S}_{\text {total }}>0.

And \Delta \mathrm{T}=0 for isothermal process.

Now, \Delta \mathrm{U}=\mathrm{n} \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm{V}} \Delta \mathrm{T}

So, \Delta \mathrm{U}=0

Correct option  \mathrm{\Delta U=0, \Delta S_{\text {total }} \neq 0}.

Therefore, the correct option is (3).
