For occurrence of photoelectric effect, the incident light should have frequency more than a certain minimum which is called the threshold frequency \left(\mathrm{\nu}_0\right).

We have, \frac{1}{2} \mathrm{mv}^2=\mathrm{h\nu}-\mathrm{h\nu}_0

For photoelectric effect emission \mathrm{\nu}>\mathrm{\nu}_0

where \mathrm{\nu} is the frequency of the incident light.
