  • Platyhelminthes are also called flat-worms because the cross-section of the body is flat.
  • The body is dorsoventrally flattened.
  • This phylum consists of planaria, flukes and tapeworms.
  • These are triploblastic animals, i.e., the embryo shows the arrangement of three germ layers as ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm.
  • These are acoelomate. The space between ectoderm and endoderm is filled with mesodermal tissue called parenchyma.
  • They show bilateral symmetry. They are the first animals to show a degree of cephalization. 
  • They show organ level of body organization.
  • They are mostly parasitic. Some free-living forms are aquatic.
